It's 2024 & The CANON EOS R is more than worth it. Let me tell you!

Two years ago I decided to switch from my beloved Fujifilm system to the Canon EOS R. The "full-frame" hype led me to believe that that having a full frame sensor was synonymous with being a professional photographer. Two years later with the Canon Eos R.. was it worth the trade?

Why I switched .

It really depends on what you want for your photos. Like I mentioned above, I fell for the hype of the full frame look. The Canon EOS R has benefits with its full-frame sensor like better low-light performance and more background blur. But don't forget about what you're giving up. Fujifilm's X-T3 and X-T2 are known for great image quality, small size, and unique film styles.

Pros of the Canon Mirrorless System

1. Big sensor: The EOS R has a 30.3-megapixel sensor that gives really clear pictures.
2. RF Mountt: The RF mount lets you use cool new lenses that make your pictures better and help the camera focus faster. Canon made some really good RF lenses for the EOS R.
3. Fast autofocus: The camera has a smart autofocus system that works quickly and accurately when you're taking photos or shooting videos.
4. 4K video: The EOS R can record really good quality 4K videos, so you can use it for lots of different creative projects.
5. Moveable touchscreen: The screen can be moved around to help you take pictures from different angles, and you can use your fingers to quickly change settings and focus.

Cons of switching to Canon

1. One Card Slot: Some users might find it limiting to have only one card slot, especially if they need extra storage or a backup slot. This has never failed for me. But when shooting really important gigs.. I miss having a backup card slot like I had with my Xt3.
2. 4K Video: When shooting in 4K video mode, there is a crop effect. I’m not a huge fan of shooting video with the Eos R.
3. Battery Life: Surpisingly, better than the Fuji Xt3’s battery. But now that the new Xt5 is out i don’t think my Eos R will outperform battery.
4. Limited Lens Selection: Canon's initial range of RF lenses might be considered somewhat limited compared to the extensive EF lens lineup for Canon DSLRs. However, Canon is continuously releasing new RF lenses. . that comes with a significantly high cost.
5. Adapted EF Lenses: While the camera can use EF lenses with an adapter, some users may find that adapted lenses don't fully utilize the RF mount's capabilities.

Why the Canon Eos R is still a great camera in 2024..

Camera gear is a debated topic and I believe the person behind the camera matters more than the equipment. The Canon EOS R doesn't excite me, but it meets my photography needs reliably. It works well with my RF 100 2.8 Macro lens. It's reliable, and I hardly use anything else for professional work. It really is the “Toyota” of cameras. Instead of spending your hard earned cash on the latest hyped and crazed tik tok camera, consider the Canon EOS R or R6 and invest in RF lenses. They will last and provide some incredible quality for years to come.
